Freelancing 101
Everything you need to know to start freelancing or go self-employed.
Freelancing can be a flexible way to earn income and build experience — but it comes with its own rules and risks that aren't always obvious when you're starting out.
In this in-person interactive session, you'll get a practical, no-nonsense introduction to what it really takes to freelance in the UK – whether as a side hustle or a full-time career – plus first-hand insight from someone with experience in the field.
Who's it for?
Open to all University of Edinburgh students and recent graduates (within two years of graduating), no matter what you study or your level of experience.
Whether you've got a specific skill you're thinking of offering — design, writing, coding, tutoring, consulting and more — or you're just weighing up whether self-employment could work for you, this session is for anyone at the start of exploring the idea, before you've taken any concrete steps.
What we'll cover:
- What freelancing actually involves day-to-day, and how to know if it's right for you
- The practical basics: registering as self-employed, tax and National Insurance essentials
- How to price your work and get paid on time
- Where your first clients are likely to come from, and how to pitch yourself with confidence
- Why contracts matter, even for small jobs, and what to include
- A live Q&A with a guest freelancer, sharing real experience of getting started, finding clients and navigating the ups and downs
Expect a mix of short talks, discussion and hands-on exercises rather than a straight lecture.
What you'll get
- A clear, realistic picture of what freelancing involves, so you can decide if it's a good fit
- Practical tools and knowledge to take your first steps as a freelancer
- A first draft of your own "elevator pitch" for potential clients
- First-hand insight and Q&A time with an experienced freelancer
- Guidance on where to go next for more support

A note on Student visas
If you're an international student on a Student visa, please note that UK visa conditions generally do not permit self-employment or freelance work.
We'd still encourage you to attend, as much of the content is useful context — but we recommend checking your visa conditions carefully before taking any steps toward freelancing.
For more information on visas please visit our Enterprise Portal.
