Event Description {{detailsExpanded ? '- Show Less' : '+ Show More'}}

We will be joined by John Hughes who will teach you the basics around finance including:

1) The 3 statement structure of cash flow, profit & loss and balance sheet and why a) each statement is important in its own right and b) why they are linked

2) How to value your own company when you are raising investment and the different ways to do that valuation

3) The distinction between direct and indirect costs

4) Benchmarking indirect costs and how to do this to save time when you are preparing a 3 year forecast.

John has worked 20 years in the Agri-merchant trade as a grain trader in eastern Scotland and has spent the last 12-year period mainly in a self-employed capacity working for Business Gateway in Edinburgh and advising high growth companies through Scottish Enterprise’s Growth Pipeline

service. He enjoys the work as it brings him into contact with some great entrepreneurs, some spinning out of Edinburgh’s four universities and others who are simply great innovators. John is an expert on the multiplicity of grant and loan funds in the city from a range of sources and have taken a special interest in the Angel Investor community which has a good fit with the companies he meets. He connects companies to Scottish Enterprise and all of its divisions including its bank and its international divisions and know the relevant people to speak to. John is now advising student entrepreneurs at our Student Enterprise Hub.

Come along with any questions you have about financial forecasting.

This session is open to University of Edinburgh staff, students and recent alumni who have already met with a business adviser to discuss their business idea.

If you have not met a business adviser and would like to attend, please book one here. If you have any questions please contact Karis on Karis.Gill@ei.ed.ac.uk.
