The Data-Driven Innovation Cup pitching competition is the culmination of 8 weeks of expert training and hard work as startup teams have defined real-world problems research can solve and built their route-to-market. The winners will receive a share of £5,000!

This competition is part of Edinburgh Innovations and the University of Edinburgh’s Venture Builder, a series of exciting data-driven entrepreneurship activities responding to the accelerating pace of many scientific fields by bringing new technologies to market. Find out more about data-driven entrepreneurship here.

HealthNcare    Creating innovative solutions to help people easily access quality healthcare

Bennu.ai         Developing a smart bin that sorts trash automatically for a net zero economy

Tranzant           We use sensors technology in a data-driven approach to optimise public transportation decision and build smarter cities

Circl.Ed Learning circles that get you ready for education abroad

Saaf     Storage and sterilisation services for developing healthcare systems

Podspectrix     Improving patient outcomes through AI-enhanced diabetes care management

Altra    Improving education by giving teachers time-saving apps

Omie Energy  Giving households and businesses access to consistent electricity through solar energy at a cheaper and more affordable cost

Efemerai          Bringing software quality assurance to machine learning

MeetDoc          Giving millions of patients control over their health goals and treatment journey

Meet the Judges

Iain Mackie is the co-founder and Head of Machine Learning for Datasaur a big data & analytics company focused on e-commerce. Iain also is an investor for the Creator Fund an early stage venture capital fund.

Laura Bernal is the DDE Incubator Programme Manager supporting students, researchers and external innovators to develop post-Covid AI solutions and high growth businesses in key Data-Driven research areas. Laura is also the co-founder of Net Minds helping businesses and academics to connect and work together.

Poonam Malik is an investor with Investing Women and screens pitches from startups seeking investment. Poonam also sits on a number of boards including the Board of Directors of Scottish Enterprise (SE) where she helps to guide the direction of the organisation and ensure Scottish Enterprise is adding value to Scotland's economy.

Simon Durrant is a qualified Chartered Accountant (ICAS) with varied commercial experience, having founded his own company and worked with a wide range of others as part of his roles in strategy consultancy, accounting, finance and early stage investment. Simon is currently an investment executive for Old College Capital.
