Edinburgh Innovations is proud to present the next event in the Spotlight on Industry series showcasing successful collaborations between University of Edinburgh researchers and industry partners.

This event is of particular interest to researchers and academics wanting to engage with industry and a great example of how university research can help address applied challenges.

Speakers

  • Professor Till Bachmann, Deputy Head of Infection Medicine & Personal Chair of Molecular Diagnostics and Infection 

Till is an expert in point of care detection of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, conducting research at the interface of biomarkers and rapid diagnostics. Till is Editor of the journal JAC-Antimicrobial Resistance and fulfils a range of industrial and institutional advisory roles worldwide. As such he is vice-chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), panel member for the Longitude Prize on Antibiotics, Scientific Advisory Board member of CARB-X (Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator), of BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) for Devices & Diagnostics under National Biopharma Mission of the Department of Biotechnology of the Indian Government, and the German Institute for Bioprocessing and Analytical Measurement Techniques

  • Claus Marquordt, Co-Founder & CEO Integrated Graphene Ltd

Claus has worked for 19 years in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) development and is an established innovator. After 12 years as Development Leader in Industry he became Managing Director of RD Support ApS in 2013 and increased turnover 5-fold to £1.5m by establishing RD Support as a one-stop-LOC (Lab-on-a-chip) company. In 2014, Claus founded RD Support Ltd in Stirling as RD Support’s R&D centre. After winning the Scottish Higgs Edge competition in December 2016 Claus founded RD Graphene Ltd to exploit the $1trn application market. In 2020, RD Graphene rebranded to Integrated Graphene to signify the transition to an advanced materials manufacturer.

Background

The Bachmann Lab has developed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) based biosensors for point of care acute infection detection. Their key feature is the label and target amplification of free nucleic acid detection enabling truly mobile molecular diagnostics. Integrated Graphene Ltd has developed a completely novel process to manufacture purest graphene in a foam-like 3D matrix on a variety of materials. This offers the manufacturing of low cost high performance disposable test kits. It was anticipated the merging of these technologies could be used to satisfy Covid testing demand in the short term and will pave the way for future diagnostic tests for other infections.

Edinburgh Innovations has helped the two collaborate together, protect the intellectual property, identify sources of possible follow on funding for research and to support a PhD in Infection Medicine.
