Edinburgh Innovations is proud to present the next event in the Spotlight on Industry series showcasing successful collaborations between University of Edinburgh researchers and industry partners.
This event is of particular interest to researchers and academics wanting to engage with industry and a great example of how university research can help address applied challenges.

Speakers
- Dr Andreia Silva, Impact Acceleration Associate, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Edinburgh
Andreia is an Impact Acceleration Associate at the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership. She has been using physical, chemical and mechanical techniques to understand both the macroscopic and microscopic behaviour of complex fluids. Andreia works in collaborative research projects with commercial partners, assisting industrial clients understanding and developing new products, technologies and materials in complex fluids/soft matter.

- Dr Ben Robertson, Hyaltech
Ben is a Research and Development Scientist at Hyaltech, working on characterisation and development of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices for surgical applications. He is working on novel product development and improvement of existing production processes. Ben joined Hyaltech in 2019 after graduating from Durham University as part of the SOFI CDT.

Background
The project partner Hyaltech is a branch of Zeiss that produces hyaluronic acid solutions for use in ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs). OVDs are injected into the eye by surgeons during cataract surgery in order to maintain space between the cornea and the lens region during replacement of the lens. The flow properties of the polymer solutions are critical to the performance of the product. The University’s expertise in complex fluids has helped the company to understand the flow properties of their existing products. The collaboration has, in particular, allowed analysis of the extensional rheology of their products. The company is now working on developing this acquired knowledge into a novel family of products with optimal flow properties.
