New date - 21 Nov 2022, 2pm

Edinburgh Innovations is proud to present the next event in the Spotlight on Industry series showcasing successful collaborations between University of Edinburgh researchers and industry partners.

This event is of particular interest to research-active staff interested in the EPSRC IAA Open Call for Funding and wanting to engage with industry and is a great example of how university research can help address applied challenges.

Join us online to hear how this event provides a unique opportunity to:

  • hear about an EPSRC IAA collaboration from both the company and the academic perspectives
  • explore how multidisciplinary industry partnerships can develop
  • learn what it is like to develop an industry partnership and how this can benefit you and your career
  • ask your questions about the project and the EPSRC IAA during the audience Q&A session

About the project - A secondment

The purpose of this secondment was to work with Kaya Consulting to apply uncertainty quantification models in flood modelling. One of the main natural hazard risks to the UK arises from flooding, which is set to intensify with a changing climate. Understanding the role of uncertainty in flood hazards is critical to ensuring long-term resilience to flood events. However, traditional probabilistic methods require large sample sizes and are thus unfeasible for industrial uses. This project has assessed a range of uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods at different case studies to be included within industry assessments of flood hazard. The work utilised recent advancements in UQ methods and applied these with Kaya Consulting, an SME specialising in flood risk assessment and environmental appraisal. Ultimately the collaboration aims to positively impact Industry, Regulators, governments, insurance companies and society as a whole.

Speakers

Lindsay joined the University of Edinburgh in January 2022 as the Chair in Environmental Engineering. She is a Civil Engineer with over 20 years’ experience and is author to over 50 peer-reviewed journal papers in high-impact journals, and 6 book chapters.

She has worked both in industry as an engineer (Jacobs 2003-2007) as well as in academia. From 2007-2010 she worked in the Netherlands at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (now known as IHE Delft) where she was involved in education, capacity building and research projects in river systems across the world. Most of her work was focused in Africa on the Nile and the Zambezi basins, and Asia on the Mekong river. In 2010 she joined Heriot-Watt University and in 2016 was awarded an EPSRC LWEC Challenge Fellowship to focus on Water Resilient Cities, focussing on climate change uncertainty and how we can adapt to its impacts for UK cities. In addition, she was involved in research on climate change impacts to water resources across India, Sub-Saharan Africa and South America.

Michael is a hydrologist and hydraulic modeller with over 25 years of consulting experience. He is the Managing Director of Kaya Consulting Limited, a Scottish-based flood risk, hydrology and environmental consultancy. He has experience of hydrology and river modelling gained from years of work in the UK, Canada and India, from the planning and installation of flow monitoring networks, to flood mapping, design flow estimation and the development of flood management measures. His experience of flood modelling goes back to the late 90s when he worked at the University of Bristol undertaking research on 2D flood modelling and their linkage to infiltration and hydrological models. In recent years he has been a visiting lecturer at Heriot-Watt University and worked with university staff developing collaborative research into flood uncertainty, vulnerability assessments and climate change. He is currently the Chair of the Scottish Hydrological Group.
